The Warren Bar and Burrow and Penn Cove Eatery has partnered with local celebrity chefs and major liquor companies to provide 100 complimentary meals a day to feed the service industry employees who found themselves unemployed in the wake of Coronavirus. Every night, from 7 pm to 9 pm starting on Friday, March 20, 2020, for the next two weeks, longer if the closures continue, the Warren will feature a take-out meal available to anyone with proof of bar/restaurant employment.

“We need to look out for our community who are among the hardest hit by these forced closures,” said Spencer Warren, owner of the Warren. “The majority of restaurant employees are not salaried. The people who serve you when you go out and eat are among the most vulnerable to the sudden closures.”

To limit exposure, there is a one-in-one-out policy. The meals are available one per person and accompanied by a shot while you wait, for those 21 years-old and older. The meals are made at cost, but this hasn’t stopped participating chefs on competing to outdo each other. “It is nice to know that our community is coming together in support during this, and the food we going to eat is a lot better than the Kraft Mac and Cheese I could get from the grocery,” said Dominic Caputo of Meat and Potatoes.

Donations, both financial and those of food are welcomed.  The Warren Bar and Burrow: The Warren is next to the Benedum Center in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. It offers award-winning cocktails expertly paired with an eclectic menu featuring a mélange of sushi and quality bar food.

DATE CHANGED! - Greek Wines for Mediterranean Dishes

Join us Monday, April 6th from 5-7 to taste the wines of Greece!

Greece is known for a handful of seemingly unpronounceable grapes that should not be overlooked. We’ll feature the “Big 4” grapes of Greece. Add these wines to your arsenal for a perfect pairings with a variety of Mediterranean dishes.

  • We’ll taste Assyrtiko, a bone-dry, saline white from the island of Santorini.

  • A rich aromatic Moschofilero blend from the Peloponnese.

  • Aghiorghitiko, or more simply “Saint-George”, which mimics a silky pinot with wild berry fruit

  • Xinomavro, or “Black Acid”, a wine the reminds money the Nebbiolo grape of Barolo and Barbaresco fame.

Kosta Browne Single Vineyard Series Pinot Noir Offering

We just received our allocation of Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Single Vineyard Series wines. There’s very little to go around!

(Notes below are from the winery.)

2016 Cerise Vineyard Pinot Noir $189.99

“Fine Grit and Rustic”

Just 65 miles north of our winery in Sebastopol, CA is a parcel of land with raw, rustic character, and potential that we have only begun to tap into. It is here, in Anderson Valley, where our journey to find world-class Pinot Noir brought us in 2016. When visiting Cerise, one can feel the dichotomy of the land. Tameless and wild, but nonetheless beautiful in an unblemished sort of way. Pinot Noir blocks sit on the eastern side of the valley, facing west, 16 miles from the coast. The terrain is unrelenting, with slopes as steep as 30% ranging from 700 ft to 1,700 ft elevation. There is not a single block on flat ground. The incredible location has had a history of producing top ranking wines and we feel humbled to have the opportunity to farm this site and tell its story through our interpretation. As the years progress, we will continue to pursue wines that speak of their sense of place and invite you to join us on this exciting journey.

2017 Gap’s Crown Vineyard $189.99

“A Vineyard Made for Pinot Noir”

In 2017, Mother Nature delivered a concentrated harvest and our talented team worked tirelessly to bring the fruit in at peak quality. These wines are inspired by our desire to capture the essence of many of California's best vineyards for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This place-driven focus guides every decision in both vineyard and cellar, and each year we strive to produce exemplary representations of vintage and terroir. Gap’s Crown is considered by many to be one of the best representations of what the Petaluma Gap AVA, the southern component of Sonoma Coast, is all about. We’ve been working with the vineyard since 2006 and enjoy a long-term lease on 37 acres. Sweeping vineyards with dramatic elevation changes and clonal variety define this exemplary site. The presence of late-season fog allows for extended hang time, which promotes flavor maturation and phenolic development. Marked by intensity, this bold and beautiful wine leads with juicy, crowd-pleasing layers of blueberry and raspberry jam. Gap’s Crown has become the backbone of our Sonoma Coast program and we believe the viticultural standards here are second to none

2017 Keefer Ranch Pinot Noir $189.99

“A Candy Store of Clones in the Coolest Part of the Region”

Keefer Ranch is one of the longest tenured properties in our Single Vineyard Series. Located in Green Valley, this mystical site is characterized by cool conditions and a distinct marine influence. Kosta Browne began working with this site in 2005, in collaboration with the legendary Marcy Keefer. Sourced from the 20-acre parcel that we purchased in 2013, this is a sophisticated and graceful wine that has balanced notes of raspberry and blackberry, while energetic texture and high-toned flavors throughout the palate represent classic KB personality.

At this time we are not accepting orders for allocated items over the phone, so please stop by Penn Cove/Warren Wine to Go purchase while supplies last.

Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivée!

Beaujolais Nouveau Day is marked in France on the third Thursday in November with fireworks, music and festivals. Under French law, the wine is released at 12:01 a.m., just weeks after the wine's grapes have been harvested. Parties are held throughout the country and further afield to celebrate the first wine of the season.  Because of its seasonality and food flexibility, Beaujolais Nouveau is the ideal wine for holiday celebrations.

Most (if not all) Beaujolais Nouveau is made via a method known as carbonic maceration, in which whole grapes are fermented quickly using commercial yeast, creating a fruity, pleasant enough wine that lacks complexity.  That’s not what we have here.

Jean-Paul Brun started Terres Dorées in 1979 with a mere 4 hectares of vines in Charnay in the southern Beaujolais, an area which is slightly warmer and more limestone-driven versus the more renowned granite-rich cru villages in the northern Beaujolais. Today, the Charnay estate is around 30 acres, but with an additional 15 hectares farmed in the crus.

The farming in Charnay is organic, the cru parcels are farmed sustainably, and the soils are not worked. Harvest is by hand and of well-ripened but not over-ripened fruit, so alcohol levels are generally modest. The Terres Dorées L'Ancien vines are Jean Paul's oldest vines at 40-60 years old. There is no carbonic maceration (true for all his Gamays). The bunches are destemmed, the fruit crushed and fermented with native yeasts in tank, notably with no chaptalization; it is aged briefly and bottled in time to land in the states in November.

We were able to get only 36 bottles of Jean-Paul Brun’s superior quality Beaujolais Nouveau.  The wine will be arriving this week…
